swim / dive

Men's Swimming and Diving | February 21, 2019

GENEVA, Ohio -- Men's & women's swimming and diving had a day for the history books as four school records fell in the pool. The men's team finished the day in podium position with a third place score of 177; they trail George Washington (283 points) and George Mason (257). The women's team currently sit at ninth with 92.5 points.

MEET NOTES
  • The first record of the day was claimed by junior Marcus Forsgren in the early going. The Swede made history during the 50 Free prelims when he touched in 20.29, which broke the previous mark of 20.35 set by Austin Thomas in 2012. Forsgren finished on the podium in the event
  • Senior Kyle McElwee had two cracks at the 500 Free. He hit a prelims time of 4:28.42, almost a second shy of the 4:27.53 mark set by Bill Weibking in 1991. In the finals, however, McElwee rose to the occasion to smash the 28-year-old record with a finish of 4:27.43. McElwee placed fifth overall in the event.
  • Freshman Sara Rizzetto was the record-breaker for the women on the day. The rookie placed tenth overall in the 200 IM but her finals swim clocked in at 2:03.55, which timed faster than the decade-old record of 2:04.08 held by Shannon Duval in 2009.
  • On the final event of the day, the men's 200 Free Relay, an Explorers team of Forsgren, Norm Gregory, Daniel Johnson, and Isaiah Gregory combined to win a bronze medal with a time of 1:21.44. Forsgren and Norm Gregory were part of the previous record-holders in 2017 who clocked in at 1:22.04.
  • Other notable finishes of Day Two included freshman Phoebe Shaya's third place dive in the 1-meter, freshman Zachary Wolbert's sixth place time 200 IM, and senior Olivia DiStefano's tied-sixth finish in the 50 Free.
UP NEXT
  • La Salle will look to continue to make their mark in Explorers history as they build upon their momentum in Day Three. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. with finals starting at 6:30 p.m. All events can be streamed on ESPN+.
