Aggies Pull Away Late to Down Baseball in Series Finale

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The high-powered offense of New Mexico State (RV, 14-3) was too much for La Salle (7-6) in a 16-5 setback in the series finale on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Aggies scored four runs in the bottom of the first to hop on top early while keeping La Salle off the board after two innings.
  • La Salle got it going in the third frame as seniors Brian Tagoe and Peyton Sorrels scored off the bat of fellow senior Ben Faso. Junior Ryan Guckin then drove in Faso on an RBI single to right, bringing the Explorers within one, 4-3.
  • NM State added a run in the fourth and led by a pair after five innings.
  • In the sixth, freshman Tatem Levins singled through the right side to score senior Kevin McGowan to bring La Salle within a run once more. However, the Aggies answered with two in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-4.
  • McGowan made it a two-run difference in the top of the seventh with an infield single to allow Sorrels to score.
  • But Jason Bush hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh and the Aggies, who had 21 hits, added six more runs in the eighth to go up 16-5.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • It was the first series defeat (3-1) for the Explorers despite winning the opening game on Friday.
  • Freshman Aidan Frye started on the mound and struck out four while allowing four earned runs over six innings of work.
  • McGowan went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Explorers, while Levins was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
