Guckin, McGowan Power La Salle Past Saint Peter’s, 14-4

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Ryan Guckin and senior Kevin McGowan combined for eight RBIs and five runs to power the La Salle University baseball team to a 14-4 victory over Saint Peter's on Tuesday from Hank DeVincent Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Peacocks went on top first with a run in the opening frame, but the lead did not last long as La Salle scored eight runs in the bottom of the second.
  • McGowan scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by freshman Tatem Levins to start things off. Then, with two outs, freshman Nick O'Day got caught in a bind between third and home, but the third baseman mishandled the throw, allowing O'Day to score the go-ahead run.
  • Things quickly got out of hand for Saint Peter's after that, and senior Ben Faso drew a bases-loaded walk to score fellow senior Brian Tagoe to make it 3-1. Guckin made the Peacocks pay in the next at-bat, ripping a double down the left field line to bring home sophomore Tommy Toal and senior Peyton Sorrels.
  • Still in the second, McGowan opened things up by slugging a double to left center to score Faso and Guckin. La Salle batted around in the inning and made it an 8-1 lead when McGowan stole third and advanced home on a throwing error.
  • Guckin added to the lead in the fourth inning as he sent a ball deep over the center fielder's head and worked his way around the bases for an inside-the-park home run, his second homer of the year.
  • Saint Peter's scored three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a Jared Paladino triple, to cut the Peacocks' deficit to five.
  • La Salle answered right back in the bottom of the fifth though when Toal drove home freshman Matt Rivera on a single through the left side. Toal later scored on a sacrifice fly by Guckin to make it 11-4.
  • McGowan made it a 10-run difference in fifth as he drove in Sorrels and Faso on a double to left center and then made his way all the way around the bases as the center fielder struggled to handle the ball.
