Seven Late Runs Push Villanova Past Baseball, 8-6

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - Despite holding a 5-1 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth, the La Salle University baseball team fell to Villanova, 8-6, on Friday. The Wildcats scored seven runs over the sixth and seventh innings to snag the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • La Salle had an opportunity in the first inning, as senior Peyton Sorrels led off the game with a single and worked his way to third base, but he was left stranded.
  • Villanova went on top first, scoring a run in the second inning on a balk.
  • The Explorers turned things around in the fourth though, scoring five runs in the inning, all coming with two outs.
  • Freshman Tatem Levins tied the game by driving in senior Kevin McGowan on an RBI single to center field. Senior Brett Simon later brought Levins home with an RBI single through the left side, giving La Salle a 2-1 lead.
  • Two batters later, senior Peyton Sorrels worked a bases-loaded walk to bring in freshman Quentin Brown for a third run, and then senior Ben Faso capped it off with a two-run single up the middle to score Simon and sophomore Tommy Toal.
  • Villanova chipped away at the La Salle lead in the fourth, coming within two after a two-run home run by JP Radvany.
  • Things took a turn for the worst for the Explorers in the seventh inning, as the Wildcats took advantage of two walks and an error to get five runs to suddenly leap in front, 8-5.
  • La Salle had another big opportunity in the eighth, loading the bases with only one out. Sorrels brought in sophomore Jack Cucinotta on a sacrifice fly to center to make it a two-run difference, but that was all the Explorers could get the rest of the way.
