Baseball Uses 15 Hits to Down Villanova, 8-7

PHILADELPHIA - Five Explorers posted multi-hit games led by a four-hit day by senior Kevin McGowan, as the La Salle University baseball team picked up its 10th win of the season, 8-7, over Villanova from Hank DeVincent Field on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Villanova tallied the first two runs on a pair of hits in the opening inning to take a quick 2-0 advantage.
  • La Salle immediately answered in the bottom of the inning though, putting up four runs in the first inning. Junior Ryan Guckin drove in the first run, scoring senior Kevin McGowan on a single up the middle. Guckin later scored to tie the game a two apiece when freshman Nick O'Day was hit by pitch.
  • Senior Ben Faso scored on a balk in the next at-bat to put the Explorers ahead by a run. Freshman Quentin Brown then brought home fellow rookie Tatem Levins on a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Explorers a 4-2 lead heading to the second frame.
  • The Wildcats went back on top in the third, however, as Nick Lorusso and Timothy Lilly both hit two-run homers to make it 6-4 in favor of Villanova.
  • The Explorers got one back in the bottom of the third, as freshman Matt Rivera hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Levins to cut the deficit to just one.
  • McGowan tied the game at six in the fourth when he ripped a single through the right side, allowing senior Peyton Sorrels to score the tying run.
  • Lilly hit his second long ball on the day for Villanova in the sixth, giving the visiting Wildcats a one-run advantage, 7-6.
  • But the Explorers answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, with Sorrels scoring the tying run on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Faso drove a double to right center to score Guckin for an 8-7 lead.
  • Junior Erik Janss effectively got the Explorers through the seventh and eighth innings before handing the ball over to senior Connor Hinchliffe, who had a perfect ninth inning en route to his seventh save of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • McGowan went 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Guckin and Sorrels each had three hits and two runs apiece as well. Faso and Levins also had two hits each.
  • La Salle (10-7) reaches the 10-win mark nearly an entire month earlier than it did last season (April 13, 2018).
  • Freshman Aidan Frye started on the mound and allowered six runs and seven hits over five innings with five strikeouts. Frye, Janss (2-1) and Hinchliffe (Sv, 7) combined for 12 strikeouts on the day.
UP NEXT
  • La Salle will conclude its series with Villanova in Plymouth Meeting on Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. first pitch.
