Baseball Piles up 19 Runs in Home Win over Fairleigh Dickinson

PHILADELPHIA - Nine different Explorers posted a hit as the La Salle University baseball team racked up 19 runs on 16 hits in a 19-9 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson from Hank DeVincent Field on Wednesday. Senior Ben Faso and freshmen Tatem Levins, Quentin Brown and Ross Mulhall all homered in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fairleigh Dickinson jumped on top first with a pair of runs in the opening inning to take a 2-0 lead.
  • That lead didn't last long, as Faso tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer to left to score senior Peyton Sorrels along the way. Brown later singled up the middle to bring home Levins for the go-ahead run, making it 3-2 Explorers.
  • La Salle never looked back from there, with Brown pushing the Explorers out to a 6-2 lead in the third after hitting his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to right to score Levins and fellow freshman Nick O'Day.
  • Mulhall added to the lead in the fourth by sending his first collegiate homer down the left field line to bring in Levins once more to extend the lead to 8-2.
  • In the fifth, O'Day ripped a double down the left field line to score Sorrels and junior Ryan Guckin to make it an eight-run lead, and then Levins launched his second homer of the year to right field, a three-run shot that pushed La Salle in front 13-2.
  • The Knights cut the deficit down to seven in the top of the sixth as Sal Monticciolo hit a grand slam to left field.
  • The Explorers immediately answered in the bottom of the sixth though, pouring in six runs to take a commanding 19-6 advantage. Faso brought home Sorrels on a fielder's choice, followed by a two-run double down the right field line by Levins. Freshman Nick Di Vietro, who had his first career hit in the game, tripled to right center to score Levins and Mulhall before scoring on a groundout by junior Dylan Evans to make it a 13-run lead.
  • FDU got three runs in the ninth inning on a home run by Brad Levinson, but that was as close as the Knights could come as La Salle rolled to victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Levins had a career game, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs and five runs scored. He finished just a triple away from the cycle.
  • Brown drove in four runs, while O'Day was 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Faso scored three runs and drove in three more, including his fourth homer of the year, which was his second straight game going yard. Sorrels also scored three runs, and Di Vietro went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.
  • Redshirt senior Greg Paprocki started on the mound and allowed two runs over 2+ innings. Junior Pete Berenato picked up his first win for the Blue and Gold after scattering four runs on five hits with five strikeouts over 3.2 innings of relief.
  • La Salle (12-8) improves to 7-2 at home, already eclipsing last year's home record of 6-13. The Explorers are also already only two wins away from their overall win total from 2018 as well.
UP NEXT
