Guckin Homers Twice as Baseball Rolls Past Delaware State, 12-2

PHILADELPHIA – Junior Ryan Guckin hit two home runs as the La Salle University baseball team racked up 16 hits in a 12-2 home victory over Delaware State on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Tommy Toal laced a ball down the third base side to drive in classmate Jack Cucinotta for the opening run in the third inning. Senior Peyton Sorrels then scored in the next at-bat to make it 2-0 Explorers.
  • Cole Garey hit a solo homer for the Hornets in the fourth, but aside from that, starting pitcher Mike Jenkins limited Delaware State to just five hits over his five innings on the mound.
  • La Salle surged ahead 6-1 in the fifth behind five hits. Cucinotta led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Kevin McGowan. Sorrels later scored on an RBI single single by senior Ben Faso to extend the lead to three, 4-1.
  • Guckin made it 6-1 in the fifth after belting a two-run shot to left field to score Faso and provide a comfortable five-run cushion.
  • Faso notched his second RBI single of the day in the sixth, driving one through the left side to bring home Toal for a 7-1 lead. Guckin followed that up with a no-doubt three-run blast well over the left field wall, his fourth long ball of the year, to push the advantage to 10-1.
  • In the seventh, Sorrels ripped a two-run single up the middle to score freshmen Matt Rivera and Nick Di Vietro, providing an 11-run lead. The Hornets would add a run in the eight, but La Salle cruised to a 10-run victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Guckin finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs and a walk to go with the two homers. Toal was also 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
  • Sorrels, Faso, Cucinotta and freshman Tatem Levins all posted multi-hit games as well.
  • Jenkins (3-0) allowed only one run while scattering five hits and notching three strikeouts over his five innings. Jackson Ray, Malik Brown, James Kelly and Niko Jenkins combined for four innings of relief, giving up just three hits.
UP NEXT
  • La Salle will return to Atlantic 10 action this weekend when they travel to St. Bonaventure. Game one is set for Friday at 3 p.m.
