ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - In a Friday doubleheader at St. Bonaventure, La Salle starting pitchers
Aidan Frye and
Colin Scanlon put forth strong performances, but it wasn't enough as the Explorers dropped two games in Atlantic 10 play. Freshman
Nick O'Day paced the offense with four runs driven in and four hits on the day.
GAME 1: St. Bonaventure 14, La Salle 5
- Frye got off to a strong start on the mound, allowing only one hit over the first three innings as the two squads entered the fourth scoreless.
- La Salle got on the board in the fourth inning as O'Day and sophomore Jack Cucinotta led off with back-to-back singles. One out later, the two scored when senior Peyton Sorrels reached on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder for the first two runs of the game.
- Sophomore Tommy Toal followed that up with an RBI double to left field on the first pitch he saw, bringing in Sorrels for a 3-0 lead.
- Frye maintained a shutout until the fifth when the Bonnies snuck in a run on a bunt and an error. St. Bonaventure added two more runs in the sixth to tie the game at three all.
- O'Day put the Explorers back on top in the seventh, ripping a two-run single up the middle to bring home senior Ben Faso and freshman Tatem Levins tp make it 7-5 La Salle.
- However, the Bonnies went off for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh and four more in the eighth to run away with the opening game.
GAME 2: St. Bonaventure 3, La Salle 2
- St. Bona jumped ahead as Tyler Keller drove in Sam Fuller in the first and third innings.
- Scanlon held the Bonnies scoreless in the fourth and fifth before handing the ball to senior Connor Hinchliffe, who struck out three over 2.2 innings of relief.
- It was O'Day providing the runs in game two as well as the rookie hammered a double to left center to score Faso and junior Ryan Guckin, tying the game at two apiece.
- Fuller, who had eight hits in the two games, scored for the third time on an error to put the Bonnies ahead, 3-2, finishing as the final blow.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- O'Day went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in the first game, while Frye was efficient in a no-decision, allowing just two earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work.
- Frye scattered just two runs on four hits while striking out six in the opening game. Scanlon allowed only two runs and on five hits with five strikeouts in game two.
