Baseball Sweeps Quinnipiac in Saturday Doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University baseball team notched a doubleheader sweep over Quinnipiac on Saturday from Hank DeVincent Field. The Explorers went off for 18 hits, including four home runs, in an 18-8 win in game one before hanging on for a 2-1 victory in game two.

Game 1: La Salle 18, Quinnipiac 8
  • The Bobcats jumped on top first with three runs in the opening frame and another in the second to go on top 4-0.
  • La Salle answered the call in third though, tying the game at four apiece. Senior Kevin McGowan drove in senior Peyton Sorrels and sophomore Tommy Toal on a single to right, and then McGowan scored on a two-run home run by fellow senior Ben Faso.
  • The Explorers turned the tides after that, as Sorrels delivered the go-ahead RBI single to score freshman Nick O'Day in the fourth.
  • La Salle extended its advantage to 8-4 in the fifth. Faso scored on an RBI single by junior Ryan Guckin followed by a two-run bomb to left field by sophomore Jack Cucinotta, giving the Explorers a four-run cushion.
  • Not letting up, the Explorers put up three more runs in the sixth. McGowan ripped an RBI double to left center to bring in Toal. Freshman Tatem Levins then knocked in McGowan with a single to right. Later on, O'Day brought in Faso on an infield single to give La Salle an 11-4 lead.
  • Quinnipiac chipped away at the lead with three runs in seventh, but Levins answered with a grand slam in the bottom of the frame to push the advantage to 15-7.
  • The Bobcats added a run in the eighth, but that was as close as they would come as Sorrels hit a solo homer, freshman Ross Mulhall hit an RBI double and Guckin capped off the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly.
Game 2: La Salle 2, Quinnipiac 1 (7)
  • After an offensive outburst in the first game, the second contest was all pitching.
  • Sophomore Colin Scanlon allowed just one run over five innings, keeping Quinnipiac scoreless through the first four innings.
  • La Salle got all the runs it needed in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Tommy Toal scored the game's first run on an RBI groundout by Ben Faso. Kevin McGowan then scored later in the frame on an RBI single by Ryan Guckin.
  • The Bobcats cut the lead in half on an Evan Vulgamore RBI single in the fifth. But senior Connor Hinchliffe took over pitching duties in the sixth and shut Quinnipiac down en route to his ninth save of the year.
