Jenkins’ Success Continues as La Salle Holds off Penn, 7-6

PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore right-handed pitcher Mike Jenkins improved to 4-0 on the year and held one of the nation's hottest hitting teams in check, as the La Salle University baseball team earned a 7-6 victory over Philadelphia Big 5 rival Penn on Tuesday from Hank DeVincent Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Penn, which entered the game second in the country in scoring with 10.1 runs per game, looked like it was heading for another big offensive day early, scoring twice in the opening inning to take a 2-0 lead.
  • But senior Ben Faso hit a three-run home run to right center, bringing home sophomore Tommy Toal and senior Kevin McGowan to put the Explorers ahead 3-2 after the first inning of play.
  • Toal added to the lead in the second as he singled to left, allowing fellow sophomore Jack Cucinotta to score for a 4-2 advantage.
  • The Quakers pulled within one in the third on an RBI triple by Josh Hood before Jenkins got the final batter to go down swinging. Penn threatened again in the fourth with the bases loaded and two outs, but again Jenkins worked his way out of the jam to preserve the lead.
  • From there, senior Peyton Sorrels came into his own and knocked in freshman Nick O'Day on a single through the right side. Sorrels drove in O'Day again in the sixth with an RBI triple and then scored on interference to give La Salle a four-run lead, 7-3.
  • Penn got within striking distance in the eighth though and trailed by just one after a Sean Phelan home run.
  • Senior Connor Hinchliffe came on to close it out in the ninth and registered his 10th save of the season to seal the Big 5 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Jenkins allowed just three runs on six hits over five innings of work with five strikeouts.
  • Sorrels went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Toal and freshman Tatem Levins each added two hits apiece.
  • Hinchliffe moved into sole possession of fourth place on the program's single season saves list.
  • La Salle (19-18) already has its most wins since the 2015 season (24-27-1) and improved to 12-7 at home, its most home victories since the 2013 campaign (14-6).
UP NEXT
  • La Salle will remain in Philadelphia for a three-game A-10 series at Saint Joseph's starting Thursday at 3 p.m.
