Baseball Routs Saint Peter’s, 24-7

PHILADELPHIA – Junior Ryan Guckin hit two home runs and senior Peyton Sorrels also went deep as the La Salle University baseball team piled up season highs with 24 runs on 23 hits in a 24-7 stomping of Saint Peter's on Tuesday from Hank DeVincent Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Peacocks actually led by three early on as they scored three runs on two hits and an error to lead 3-0 after the top of the first inning.
  • La Salle got one back in the bottom half of the first as senior Ben Faso knocked in Sorrels with a double to right center.
  • The Explorers then scored eight runs in the second inning to surge in front.
  • Sorrels started things off with a two-run, no-doubt homer to right to score Guckin and tied the game up at three apiece. Faso later drove in sophomore Tommy Toal on a single to center, and freshman Tatem Levins followed suit with a single through the left side, scoring senior Kevin McGowan. After Faso scored on a wild pitch, Guckin blasted a three-run bomb to left to give La Salle a 9-3 lead.
  • Saint Peter's cut the deficit down to five in the third on a Jared Palidino RBI double, but La Salle packed on three more runs in the bottom half.
  • Toal ripped a single down the right field line to score Sorrels and later came in to score himself on a double to left by Faso. Once again, Levins followed suit and drove in Faso with a double of his own to make it 12-4.
  • The Peacocks added one run in the fourth, but freshman Chuck Kelley held the lead for the Explorers behind five strong innings on the mound.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, La Salle put things out of reach with seven more runs. McGowan doubled to score Sorrels, followed by an RBI single by Faso that brought in Toal. Levins roped a two-run double to left center, and then Guckin cleared the bases with another three-run homer, his sixth of the year, stretching the lead to 19-5.
  • After Saint Peter's scored once more in the sixth, senior Brian Tagoe scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore Jack Cucinotta to make it 20-6.
  • Cucinotta got an RBI single in the eighth to bring in junior Dylan Evans, and senior Brett Simon drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 22-6 game. Sorrels capped off the scoring for La Salle with a two-run single to center.
  • The Peacocks got one run across in the ninth, but that was all she wrote.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • It was the most runs scored by the Explorers since putting up 25 against Georgetown during the 1999 season, and it was the first 20-run game for La Salle since scoring 20 on March 18, 2015.
  • Nine different Explorers had a hit, including seven with multi-hit games.
  • Sorrels, Faso and Levins each had four hits apiece.
  • Kelley allowed just four earned runs over five innings to earn his first win. Niko Jenkins allowed just one unearned run over three innings.
