LEWISBURG, Pa. – La Salle held leads of 5-1 and 7-4, but Bucknell scored five unearned runs in the seventh innings to steal a win from the Explorers, 9-7, on Wednesday. Senior
Peyton Sorrels posted his second consecutive four-hit game in the defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Mike Jenkins threw another strong start on the mound for the Explorers and held the Bison to only one run over the first four innings.
- La Salle struck right from the first frame, as Sorrels scored the opening run on a sacrifice fly by senior Ben Faso.
- After Bucknell tied the game with a sacrifice fly of its own in the third, the Explorers pounced back on top in the fourth. Sophomore Jack Cucinotta doubled down the left field line to drive home freshman Tatem Levins with the go-ahead run. Cucinotta then scored in the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly by junior Ryan Guckin to provide a 3-1 lead.
- Senior Kevin McGowan provided two more runs in the fifth with a two-run double to right center, scoring Sorrels and sophomore Tommy Toal to extend the advantage to 5-1.
- But after Jenkins was pulled, Bucknell got it going. The Bison scored three times in the sixth to suddenly pull within a run, 5-4.
- McGowan extended La Salle's advantage to two by driving in freshman Ross Mulhall on a sacrifice fly in the seventh, and then Faso delivered an RBI double to score Toal for a 7-4 cushion.
- However, Bucknell took advantage of an error, and after a bases-loaded walk, Will Gannon tied the game at seven with a two-run single. Evan Madigan then hit a two-run double to put the Bison on top by two.
- Sorrels led off with a single in the top of the ninth, but La Salle couldn't take advantage.
