Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Massachusetts

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University baseball team split an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader with Massachusetts on Saturday from Hank DeVincent Field. La Salle took game one, 6-5, before falling in the second game, 9-6.

Game 1: La Salle 6, UMass 5
  • Senior Peyton Sorrels continued his hot streak with a leadoff single in the first and scored the game's first run on an RBI groundout by fellow senior Kevin McGowan.
  • McGowan later made a diving stop at third base to close out the top of the third inning and the Explorers added on to their lead in the bottom half. Senior Ben Faso knocked in Sorrels on a single up the middle to make it a two-run advantage. Freshman Tatem Levins followed that up with his second double of the game, scoring sophomore Tommy Toal for a 3-0 lead.
  • UMass pulled within a run in the fourth behind a Logan Greene two-run home run.
  • The Explorers pushed the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth as junior Dylan Evans singled through the right side to allow sophomore Jack Cucinotta to score from second.
  • The Minutemen scored on a failed pickoff attempt in the fifth and loaded the bases, but sophomore Colin Scanlon got out of a bases-loaded jam to preserve the lead. However, UMass scored on a single in the sixth to tie the game up at four all.
  • Levins broke the tie in the seventh with his fourth hit of the game, a two-run double scoring Toal and Faso, giving the Explorers a 6-4 lead.
  • UMass came within one again, 6-5, with a run in the eighth before senior Connor Hinchliffe took the mound with one out. Hinchliffe worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam and then retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his 11th save of the year.
Game 2: UMass 9, La Salle 6
  • Just like in the first game, Sorrels scored the opening run of the second game on an RBI groundout by McGowan in the first inning.
  • UMass evened the score at one apiece in the third though on an RBI triple by Eddy Hart.
  • Faso put the Explorers back on top in the fourth inning with a deep double to left, bringing in McGowan and sparking a five-run inning. Evans then delivered a two-run single to right center to score Faso and Levins to make it 4-1.
  • Still in the fourth, senior Brett Simon hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing junior Ryan Guckin to come home for a 5-1 lead. Sorrels then knocked in Evans to stretch the advantage to 6-1 with a single up the middle.
  • Sophomore starting pitcher Colin Kennedy exited with a five-run lead, but with just one swing of the bat, the Minutemen tied it on a grand slam by Anthony Videtto. UMass then scored three runs in the top of the sixth to jump in front, 8-6.
  • The Minutemen added another run in the eighth and their bullpen kept the Explorers in check en route to the 9-6 final.
