Strong Pitching Guides Minutemen Past Baseball, 5-2

PHILADELPHIA – Massachusetts scored four runs early and held off La Salle's late rally to capture the final game of their three-game series, 5-2, from Hank DeVincent Field on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Minutemen tallied four runs in the second inning, capped off by a three-run double by Eddy Hart, to jump on top early on.
  • Starting pitcher Mike Anthony handed the ball off to sophomore Mike Jenkins with one out in the fourth, where Jenkins retired the final two batters to leave a pair of runners stranded.
  • Jenkins worked his way out of another jam in the fifth, as UMass had the bases loaded with one out, but Jenkins got a strikeout and a flyout to end the threat.
  • UMass starter Sean Harney (3-3) allowed only one hit through the first six innings before La Salle got it going with three hits in the seventh.
  • The Explorers hit three consecutive doubles in the seventh, sparked by a one-out two-bagger by freshman Tatem Levins. Sophomore Jack Cucinotta brought home Levins with a double down the left field line, and then Cucinotta scored on a double down the right field line by junior Dylan Evans.
  • La Salle threatened again in the eighth with two men on, but the Explorers couldn't make anything of it. Senior Brian Tagoe later doubled in the ninth but was left stranded.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Jenkins, who pitched on short rest after starting on Wednesday, scattered just two hits over 4.2 scoreless innings of relief, adding a pair of strikeouts. Senior Connor Hinchliffe also pitched an inning of relief with a strikeout.
  • Levins went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk to pace La Salle at the plate.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will remain at home when they host UMBC on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
