Women’s Soccer Ties North Florida to Close Opening Weekend of Play

 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite two overtime periods, a winner couldn't be determined in Sunday's La Salle women's soccer (0-1-1) game against North Florida (1-0-1). Both teams scored a goal apiece to conclude the 2019 Carolina Nike Classic.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • La Salle won the first half statistically with seven shots, including three on net and five corner kicks as opposed to North Florida's one shot on goal. Despite the offensive efforts, the game was scoreless after one period of play.
  • Shortly after the start of the second half during the 58th minute, Bower found the back of the net to break the tie. The goal was assisted by freshman Emily Banashefski and senior Sarah DeBerardinis.
  • During the 87th minute, UNF's Leah Ferlin sent a shot on net which banged off the crossbar.
  • A minute and 20 seconds later, Thais Reiss nailed a shot past La Salle keeper Claudia Jenkins in the lower right corner to send the game to overtime.
  • Both teams took a few shots in the first overtime period, however neither were able to record a game-winner.
  • Bower took a shot during the 106th minute that nearly found the back of the net, but UNF keeper Kelli Crowley made an outstanding save in the left upper corner.
  • Senior Jess Shanahan and Banashefski each took a shot during with 108th minute, but Shanahan's was blocked and Banashefski missed high.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Jenkins (0-1-1) played all 110 minutes and recorded five saves.
  • Bower scored the lone Explorers' goal with assists from Banashefski and DeBerardinis.
  • La Salle recorded 17 shots and eight corner kicks in the game, topping UNF's nine shots and one corner.
GAME NOTES:
  • Banashefski's assist is the first of her career.
  • Freshman Leah Giles made her first career start.
  • Rookie Danielle Rooney saw her first collegiate action off the bench.
UP NEXT:
La Salle returns home to Philadelphia to host NJIT in the team's home opener Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ from McCarthy Stadium.
