DeCencio’s Heroics Not Enough for Explorers in Double Overtime Heartbreaker at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. – Sophomore Sam DeCencio scored in the 83rd minute to ultimately force extra time, but the La Salle University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat at Fordham in double overtime in its Atlantic 10 opener on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fordham got on the board in the 28th minute after drawing a foul that led to a penalty kick. Filippo Ricupati converted on the penalty kick with his second goal of the year to provide a 1-0 lead.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Brett Werner made a pair of saves in the opening half as the Explorers entered halftime trailing by a goal.
  • It looked as though Fordham was going to hang on for the win in regulation, but DeCencio had other plans, putting home his first goal of the season in the 83rd minute on a volley 25 yards out to even the score at one apiece.
  • DeCencio's tally led to overtime, where neither team found the back of the net, forcing a second overtime period.
  • In the 105th minute, Fordham's Paul Makaj scored the game-winner to hand the Rams a 2-1 victory on the golden goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Werner made six saves in net for the Explorers. Sophomores Nigel Buckley and Omari Cotterell each registered four shots apiece to pace La Salle. DeCencio and freshman Franc Gamiz Quer added two shots each.
  • The Explorers outshot the Rams, 16-13, while Fordham held a slim 9-8 shot on goal advantage.
UP NEXT
  • La Salle will remain on the road as they travel to Howard on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. contest.
