Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Three Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Downs St. Bonaventure on National TV

PHILADELPHIA – A late run by the La Salle women's basketball team (7-11, 1-4 A-10) spurred the Explorers to a 67-61 victory over St. Bonaventure (4-14, 1-4 A-10) on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Claire Jacobs, sophomore Kayla Spruill, and rookie Jordon Lewis each scored double-digit point totals and combined for 42 points. The trio also corralled 24 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Explorers hit their first two shots to open with a 4-0 lead. The home side continued on the front foot, recording seven of the next 12 points to push its advantage 11-5.
  • St. Bonaventure rattled off eight consecutive points to take its first lead of the game. A jumper by C. Jacobs closed the deficit to two, followed by a Bonnies' layup that concluded first quarter scoring with the visitors up 17-13.
  • The Blue & Gold reclaimed its lead early in the second. After exchanging layups, the Explorers scored seven unanswered to make it 22-19.
  • A 10-3 response by St. Bonaventure pushed the away side back in front, but it was a short-lived lead. La Salle finished the half on an 8-3 jaunt to make it 33-32 at the break.
  • Freshman Jordon Lewis started the third by hitting a jumper, which the Bonnies answered with a 10-2 run.
  • The Explorers went two better and embarked on a 12-2 run down the stretch. Junior Deja King kick started things with a three and a layup. A bucket from the Bonnies hardly slowed La Salle down; K. Hill sunk a shot from deep and the Explorers hit four free throws to go up five.
  • The final frame began slowly with neither side scoring until the 8:38 mark. St. Bonaventure woke up first and went on a 12-4 run to retake the lead, 56-53. K. Hill hit her third three of the game and La Salle edged its opponent 6-5 over the ensuing three minutes.
  • With St. Bonaventure up 61-59 at the 2:21 mark in the fourth, La Salle finished by scoring eight unanswered, allowing the Bonnies only one shot attempt over that duration.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • C. Jacobs finished with 16 points and a career high eight rebounds. Thirteen of her points came in the first half on 5-of-8 shooting.
  • Spruill dished 15 points and added nine boards nearing the double-double. La Salle's number 15 scored nine of her 15 points in the fourth quarter, going 2-of-2 in that frame. Six of those nine came in the final 2:09 of the game.
  • Lewis registered 11 points and corralled seven boards.
  • K. Hill dropped a career best nine points coming on three long balls.
  • The Explorers outscored St. Bonaventure 20-15 in the second period, holding their opponent to 36.3% from the floor (4-of-11).
  • The home side continued to outscore the Bonnies in the second half, 34-29, but its defensive effort was equally notable. The visitors shot 35.7% (10-of-28) over quarters three and four.
  • Winning on the Glass: La Salle out-rebounded St. Bonaventure 44-31 with a major advantage on the offensive boards (16-6).
  • The rebounding advantage led to plenty of additional offense for the Explorers, with the home side recording 20 second-chance points to the Bonnies' three.
GAME NOTES:
  • With 15 points against the Bonnies, Spruill extended her double-digit scoring streak to six games.
  • La Salle's seven wins surpass last year's win total of six games.
