PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's basketball team (11-14, 5-7 A-10) will open Wednesday's La Salle basketball doubleheader at 5 p.m. against VCU (14-11, 9-3 A-10). The men's squad will follow up the action against Fordham at 8 p.m.
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
- La Salle is riding a two-game win streak after taking down GW and Saint Joseph's on the road last week.
- In both of last week's victories, rookie Claire Jacobs, sophomore Kayla Spruill, and freshman Amy Jacobs each recorded double figure scoring totals.
- Freshman Claire Jacobs is the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after averaging 17 points and five rebounds per game in the Explorers' two wins. The Perth, Australia native leads the team in scoring with 13.5 ppg on 38.0% shooting. She's recorded double figure scoring totals in her last six games and a total of 16 games this season.
- Sophomore Kayla Spruill is second on the team in both scoring (10.3 ppg) and rebounding (5.7 rpg). The Baltimore, Md. native has registered 10 or more points in 15 games this season, including 11 of her last 13.
- Freshmen Jordon Lewis (7.5 ppg) and Amy Jacobs (7.2 ppg) round out the top four scorers. The quartet are accounting for 61.6% of La Salle's offense this season.
- Senior Shalina Miller sits atop the Explorers in rebounds (7.3) and blocks (2.5) per game. Miller is the program's all-time leading shot blocker and is three deflections away from breaking the program's single season record which she set last season.
- Junior Kate Hill is one of the best ball handlers in the country. Not only does Hill pace the Atlantic 10 in assist to turnover ratio, but is sixth in the nation at 2.87. The Toronto, Ontario product is second in the league with 109 assists and 4.5 apg.
- La Salle is averaging 61.6 ppg and allows its opponents 66.2.
SCOUTING THE RAMS:
- VCU is 14-11 and 9-3 in league play under sixth year head coach Beth O'Boyle.
- Tera Reed leads a trio of double figure scorers for the Rams at 15.4 ppg. Reed is hitting 44.5% of her shots.
- Danielle Hammond (11.2) and Taya Robinson (10.0) round out the trio. Hammond also leads the squad with 5.9 rpg.
- The Rams are scoring just 59.6 ppg and give up 57.9.
THE SERIES:
- Wednesday's game will be just the eighth between the Explorers and Rams.
- VCU holds the slim advantage in the series at 4-3. The Rams claimed last year's lone matchup by 30 points.
- La Salle's last win over the Rams came at home on Jan. 25, 2018.
