Dickerson Homers Twice, But Eighth-Inning Rally Lifts Pioneers Past Explorers

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshman Elijah Dickerson hit two home runs, but the La Salle baseball team let an eight-run lead slip away in a 10-9 setback against Sacred Heart on Saturday. The Pioneers scored eight runs in the eighth inning to steal the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was all Explorers over the first five innings as they pushed out to a lopsided 8-0 lead.
  • Senior Ryan Guckin started it off in the first inning with an RBI single to score Dickerson, and then junior Jack Cucinotta hit an RBI single of his own to bring in freshman Dylan Maria for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Dickerson made it 3-0 in the third as the rookie smacked his first collegiate homer, a solo shot to right field. Shortly after, sophomore Nick O'Day knocked in Guckin on an RBI single to make it 4-0.
  • Dickerson wasn't done just yet, launching his second long ball of the game in the fifth, another solo shot down the right field line. Freshman Connor Coolahan kept the bats hot with a bases-clearing, three-run triple to give the Explorers and eight-run advantage.
  • Sacred Heart got on the board with a pair of runs in the sixth, but the Explorers responded quickly as sophomore Tatem Levins scored on a sacrifice fly by Maria to make it 9-2.
  • Starting pitcher Gabe Rappa put forth another brilliant performance, holding the Pioneers to just two runs over his six innings of work. But after he left the game, Sacred Heart took advantage.
  • The Pioneers piled up eight runs on seven hits in the eighth inning, capped off by a three-run Jake Frasco homer to suddenly flip things upside down, 10-9.
  • La Salle put men on the corners in the bottom of the eighth but couldn't take advantage, and that was all she wrote.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Dickerson finished the day 3-for-4 with three runs to go with the two homers. Guckin and Cucinotta each posted two-hit games as well.
  • Rappa was well on his way to a 3-0 record on the mound in his first three appearances, but instead was left with a no decision. He struck out four and scattered just two runs on seven hits over six innings.
UP NEXT
  • La Salle will conclude its weekend down at Wake Forest with a 10 a.m. contest with Brown on Sunday.
