Baseball Drops Midweek Game at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – The La Salle University baseball team jumped out to a three-run lead, but Delaware State scored the final seven runs of the game to take down the Explorers, 9-5, in the Explorers' first midweek road game of the season on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Delaware State threatened with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning, but starting pitcher Mike Jenkins got a strikeout swinging to end the inning and escape the jam.
  • The Explorers followed with the first score of the game in the top of the third on an RBI single by sophomore Tatem Levins, allowing freshman Dylan Maria to score the game's first run.
  • The Hornets responded in the bottom half, however, as Jared Gillis hit a two-run homer to left to put the home team on top, 2-1.
  • With two outs in the top of the fourth, Maria stepped to the plate and sent his first collegiate home run over the wall in left center to even the score at two apiece.
  • After a leadoff double by junior Alfonse Sadallah and a walk by freshman David Smith to start the fifth, Levins came through again with a two-run double to put the Explorers back on top. Levins later scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Elijah Dickerson.
  • Things turned from there though, as Delaware State took advantage of two errors in the bottom of the fifth with three runs to tie the game, 5-5.
  • The Hornets then took the lead back in the seventh on a two-run homer from Mark Herron. The home team added two more runs in the eighth to seal the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Levins, Maria and Sadallah each had multi-hit game for the Explorers.
  • Levins went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run, while Maria was 2-for-4 with two runs to go with his first career homer. Sadallah was also 2-for-4 with a run and a double.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will head to South Carolina next for a three-game series at Wofford. Game one is set for Friday at 5 p.m.
