Baseball Falls in Series Opener at Wofford, 4-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior Colin Scanlon put forth a quality start on the mound, but the La Salle University baseball team dropped its series opener at Wofford Friday, 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wofford threatened in the third inning with runners in scoring position and one out, but Scanlon battled through with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
  • The Explorers struck first in the next frame as redshirt freshman Bubba Weigel singled through the left side to bring in junior Alfonse Sadallah for the game's first run.
  • The Terriers immediately responded, however, and leapt out to a sudden 3-1 lead on a three-run home run by Alec Cargin.
  • Wofford starter Josh Vitus and reliever Dalton Rhadans held the Explorer offense in check, combining for 10 strikeouts over eight innings.
  • In the eighth, La Salle had an opportunity with two men on and one out, but couldn't take advantage. Then Wofford added another unearned run in the bottom half on a dropped fly ball to make it 4-1.
  • Rasesh Pandya came on in the ninth and allowed just one hit to close out the win for the Terriers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Scanlon gave up only five hits and two earned runs while striking out five. Junior James Kelly threw two strong innings of relief as well with no earned runs and one hit allowed to go with two strikeouts.
  • Sadallah went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk, while Weigel was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
