Kimbrough’s Career Game Leads Explorers Past Saint Joseph’s on MLK Day, 90-83

PHILADELPHIA – Junior Jared Kimbrough scored a career-high 24 points to lead the La Salle men's basketball team past rival Saint Joseph's, 90-83, in Philadelphia Big 5 and Atlantic 10 Conference action from Tom Gola Arena on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Freshman Anwar Gill also matched his career best with 15 points and the Explorers totaled a season-high 14 steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After hitting four three-pointers on Saturday, senior Scott Spencer continued where he left off by connecting on a triple to open the game, but Jack Forrest, who had 17 first-half points for the Hawks, made all six of his shots in the opening frame and helped Saint Joseph's get out to 13-9 lead.
  • Sophomore Sherif Kenney quickly tied it back up though less than a minute later, with a dime to redshirt junior Clifton Moore for two followed by a layup of his own.
  • The Hawks responded with an 18-8 run and took a 10-point advantage with 10:49 until halftime on a pair of Forrest trifectas.
  • La Salle pulled back within three on an emphatic dunk by Kimbrough and tied things at 35-35 on a three-pointer by Spencer, before freshman Jhamir Brickus came up with a steal and a breakaway slam to give the Explorers the lead back, 37-35, forcing a Saint Joe's timeout with five minutes left in the half.
  • Forrest hit another triple to give the Hawks a one-point edge after that, but the Explorers finished the half on an 11-4 run to enter halftime up 48-42.
  • Kimbrough, who already had a season-high 10 points at the break, continued to give Saint Joe's problems in the second half, and all the momentum was on La Salle's side after Brickus found Kimbrough for an and-one layup on a highlight behind-the-back pass. Kimbrough added eight more points before the Hawks even scored their first points of the half 3:49 in.
  • In fact, the Explorers went on a 19-0 run over the final minutes of the first half and the start of the second, a spurt that spanned 5:53 and gave La Salle a 60-42 advantage.
  • The Hawks worked their way back within 11, but the Explorers answered with seven straight points and pushed the difference back to 18 on another dunk by Brickus, 74-56.
  • La Salle continued to bring the pressure and took its largest lead of the game (21) on a foul shot by Kenney to make it 82-61 with 5:47 remaining.
  • Saint Joseph's made a late run, however, scoring 10 straight points and ultimately pulling within five after a 15-2 run, but the Explorers held on for the Big 5 victory.
