Men’s Soccer Loses in Double Overtime Against VCU

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The La Salle men's soccer team remained tied with Atlantic-10 rival VCU through regulation to send the game into double overtime, but it was the Rams who came out on top with the golden goal to end it all in the 108th minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • VCU took the early lead with a goal in the fifth minute from Ethan Manheim with the help of Simon Fitch.
  • Nearly 11 minutes later the Explorers answered the call when Omari Coterrell settled the ball on the right side from Aimar Leunda who found Scott Beeks in the shuffle. Beeks crossed the ball into the center of the box to Junior Nare who came face-to-face with the VCU goalkeeper finding the left side of the net for the tying goal.
  • Nigel Buckley tried to give La Salle the lead in the second half narrowly missing the top right of the net.
  • With just minutes remaining in overtime, Beeks once again set up the attack dumping the ball to Buckley in the right wing. Buckley crossed it into traffic brushing the cleat of Nare sending the ball wide right.
  • With two minutes remaining in the second overtime, the Rams' Celio Pompeu raced the ball up the left side and placed it onto the foot of Damian Gallegos for the golden goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • La Salle totaled four corner kicks to the Rams' two.
  • VCU led the Explorers in shots 12-9.
  • Carlos Mora made four saves in the game.
  • Nare and Coterrell led the Explorers attack with two shots a piece.
