Women’s Soccer Drops Battle Against Richmond

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's soccer team suffered setback on Sunday afternoon inside McCarthy Stadium, a pair of superb strikes from the Spiders undoing the Explorer defense.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening 15 minutes saw a lot of back-and-forth battles in the midfield as the Spiders grabbed the first opportunity of the game. A blistering shot from a Spider attacker was met with the outstretched palm of Jordynn Stallard who pushed wide to keep the visitors out of the back of the net.
  • Kelli McGroarty had two chances in as many minutes to put the Explorers ahead, her first effort in the 22nd minute matched by the Richmond goalkeeper before she laced a shot 24 minutes in just over the crossbar.
  • Jessie Prillaman grabbed the opener through a bit of quality, the Richmond forward picking out the top right corner from outside of the box that gave Stallard no chance.
  • McGroarty and Co. kept attacking the net, the sophomore creating three separate chances that were saved or cleared off the line to keep La Salle scoreless.
  • Haley Gschrey continued the spell of pressure the Explorers forced in the first half through the second. After narrowly missing the frame of the net on an outstretched header, a good piece of interchange down the right side of the field saw a cross fall into the path of Gschrey, who once again went full stretch to put it on frame but was again denied by Taylor Montague.
  • With only minutes remaining, the Spiders doubled their advantage through another outstanding strike. Molly Weirman picked the ball up 25 yards out and picked out the top of the frame with a powerful strike that beat Stallard.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Explorers outshot the Spiders 8-5 at the half and 12-9 over the course of the match, but the Spiders held a slim 6-5 tally in shots on goal.
  • Both Stallard and Montague recorded four saves. McGroarty led La Salle with six shots, four on frame.
  • The Explorers held a 10-5 advantage in corners.
