Haynes and Spruill lead Explorers to Overtime Victory Against Rider

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The La Salle women's basketball team (1-1) defeated the Rider Broncs (0-2) in overtime, 67-58, on Saturday afternoon with the help of standout performances from senior Kayla Spruill and sophomore Jaye Haynes. The victory snaps a three-game losing streak to the Broncs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • La Salle jumped out to a 10-0 lead through the opening 6:00 of the first frame. Spruill had the perfect quarter shooting 3-of-3 from the field, 1-of-1 from beyond the arc and 2-of-2 from the line. Her nine points combined with Molly Masciantonio's five helped lead the Explorers to a 20-10 advantage over Rider at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Broncs tried to catch up with 10 points in the second quarter, but and 11-4 run after the media put La Salle up by 18 points, its largest lead of the game, going into the second half.
  • A huge third quarter for Rider closed the gap. The Broncs went on a 16-0 run and held the Explorers to just four points in the third frame to come within four points of the lead, 42-38.
  • The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle with the Broncs tying the game twice, ultimately forcing overtime.
  • Three consecutive 3-pointers from Jordon Lewis, Amy Jacobs and Haynes put the Explorers up by six in the first minute of overtime. La Salle held the 17-8 advantage shooting 57.1% from the field to take the 67-58 victory over Rider.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Haynes locked in a new career-best in scoring with 19 points. She set new career-highs in field goals made and field goals attempted shooting 6-of-10 from the field.
  • Spruill added 16 points and a team-high 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
  • Molly Masciantonio notched six assists and a season-high three steals.
  • Collectively the team shot 30.0% overall, 28.1% from deep and 80.0% from the line.
  • La Salle won the turnover battle with a +2 margin (20 to 22) which led to 23 points for the Explorers.
  • The Explorers out-rebounded the Broncs 45-39.
GAME NOTES:
  • La Salle ends it three game losing streak against Rider and still holds the advantage in the series 10-3.
  • The Explorers are 1-1 when leading at halftime this season.

  • The Explorers travel to Drexel on Wednesday, Nov. 17 for their first road game of the season. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
