DAVIDSON, N.C. – The La Salle women's basketball team (10-10, 6-7 A-10) defeated the Davidson Wildcats (6-10, 3-7 A-10), 55-46, on Friday afternoon with outstanding performances by sophomore
Claire Jacobs and junior
Kayla Spruill. The victory snaps a four-game losing streak to the 'Cats.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The home team jumped out to a 5-2 lead through the opening 1:26 before the Blue & Gold took 11 of the next 18 points to hold a 13-12 lead at the end of the first frame.
- La Salle opened the second period on a 6-0 run over the first 1:42 to force a 'Cats timeout. Davidson closed the gap with a 10-4 spurt for a 23-22 La Salle lead at the half.
- Over the first 5:03 leading up to the media stoppage both teams scored seven points apiece to keep La Salle up by one. Davidson outpaced La Salle 8-7 over the final 5:57 to head into the final quarter tied at 37.
- It was an even 8-8 split through the first 5:07 of the fourth to keep the game knotted. The Explorers ended play with a 10-1 advantage, including a scoreless 3:08 defensive effort. La Salle held Davidson just one field goal in its last 11 attempts and zero of its last nine.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Jacobs tallied a season best 27 points on 8-of-20 shooting and 10-of-11 from the line. She also grabbed five rebounds and five steals.
- Spruill added 17 points and a game high nine rebounds on a 7-of-11 day from the floor.
- Senior Kate Hill dished out four assists to no turnovers.
- Collectively, the squad shot 38.8% overall, 28.6% from deep, and 86.7% from the stripe.
- La Salle won the turnover battle with a +6 margin (11 to 17), which led to 19 points for the Explorers.
- The Blue & Gold owned the paint with 28 points compared to the Wildcats' 16.
- The team tied a season best 15 steals in the win.
