RICHMOND, Va. – Junior
Kayla Spruill tallied a double-double in a career performance on Thursday night, but the La Salle women's basketball team (10-11, 6-8 A-10) fell in overtime to VCU (10-9, 8-4 A-10), 63-62.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- It was nearly an even opening 5:29 of the game with VCU up 9-7. La Salle gained the lead with an 8-4 margin over the remainder of the period to go up 15-13.
- The Explorers held VCU scoreless over a 2:31 span and forced three turnovers, which culminated in a timeout by the home team. La Salle held a 20-15 lead after a 5-2 differential to begin the second stanza. VCU scored the next eight points to go up 26-22 before an Explorers' timeout. The teams traded the final 10 points of the half to put the Rams on top 31-27.
- There wasn't much movement in the lead for VCU over the first 5:16 of the third as the Rams outpaced La Salle 9-8 to hold a five-point advantage, 40-35. It was a one-point game heading into the final quarter as the Explorers chipped away at the deficit with an 8-4 margin to trail 44-43.
- La Salle scored the first four points of the final period to regain the lead at 47-44. Trailing 49-48, VCU nailed a three pointer to go ahead, 51-49. The Explorers answered with a deuce before the Rams notched another long ball to go up, 54-51. La Salle hit three from the line over the final 2:25 to tie the game at 54 with 55 second left. Neither team recorded a point in the final seconds to send it to overtime.
- The Blue & Gold jumped out in front with a triple early in the extra period. VCU took the next four points to go up, 58-57, followed by another La Salle three. Despite the effort, the Rams recorded five of the last seven points to prevail with the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Spruill finished with 27 points, 10 rebounds, and a career best six steals. She went 11-of-21 from the field, which is the most field goals she's ever scored in a game.
- Sophomore Claire Jacobs added 19 points on a 7-of-17 evening.
- La Salle shot 39.3% from the floor, 27.3% from deep, and 80.0% from the line compared to VCU's 44.0% overall, 63.6% from long range, and 60.0% from the stripe.
- The Explorers won the turnover battle with a +9 margin (11 to 20), but only scored 12 points off turnovers compared to the Rams' 11.
