RICHMOND, Va. – The comeback bid by the La Salle women's basketball team (10-12, 6-9 A-10) was too late on Saturday afternoon as it fell to Richmond (12-6, 9-4), 67-61.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Richmond held the advantage through the first 5:18 of the opening period with a 6-2 lead. La Salle followed the stoppage with a 6-2 run over a 22 second span to tie the game at eight apiece. The Spiders answered with a 6-2 spurt of their own over the final 3:29 to end the frame on top 14-12.
- Richmond owned the first 5:25 of the second as it outscored the Blue & Gold 11-4, including an 8-0 run, for a 25-18 lead with 4:22 remaining. The teams traded the final 10 points of the half for five each to give the Spiders a 32-23 lead.
- Richmond started the third with five unanswered points before the Explorers connected on the first of three-straight triples as part of a 6-4 margin. The Spiders held a 10-point lead at the media stoppage with 2:53 left. Richmond remained on top 46-36 at the end of the frame.
- The Spiders claimed four of the first six points over the initial 5:28 of the final stanza to bolster its lead to 50-38. Out of the media, stoppage, La Salle claimed the next four points to force a Richmond timeout with the deficit into single digits at eight. La Salle was able to pull within three on two different occasions but couldn't get over the hump. In the comeback effort, the Explorers shot 5-of-11 from deep with nine points from junior Molly Masciantonio and eight points from senior Deja King.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Sophomore Claire Jacobs finished with 21 points on 7-of-16 overall, 3-of-5 from deep, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line. She added seven rebounds and two assists to her line.
- King and Masciantonio tallied 11 point apiece, followed by junior Kayla Spruill with nine.
- Spruill also corralled eight boards.
- La Salle won the turnover battle at +5 (13 to 18) for 16 points off turnovers.
- The Explorers shot 30.4% from the floor, 32.4% from deep, and a perfect 8-for-8 from the stripe.
