PHILADELPHIA – After overcoming a 14-point deficit, the La Salle women's basketball team (10-13, 6-10 A-10) couldn't hold on to a lead as it fell to Duquesne (5-9, 4-6 A-10) on Friday night, 74-70.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Duquesne jumped out to an early 9-5 lead at the media stoppage after taking the first seven points of the game. The Dukes increased their lead over the final 4:57 with a 14-6 differential to go up 23-11 after one.
- Over the first 5:40 of the second period, each team tallied eight points apiece to keep the Dukes up by 12 at 31-19. La Salle cut the deficit to four with a 9-1 run over the final 3:05 for a 32-28 Dukes' lead.
- La Salle scored the first four points of the third frame to tie the game at 32 all before Duquesne took 10 of the next 19 points for a 42-41 lead at the media break with 4:40 remaining. The home team outpaced the Dukes 8-7 for the rest of the stanza for a 49-49 tie heading into the fourth.
- The Dukes had a 6-2 run over the first 1:06 of the final quarter to jump out in front 55-51. Duquesne continued to hold the advantage over the next 3:41 with a 9-7 margin for a 64-58 lead with 4:40 left. The Explorers took 11 of the next 16 points to tie the game at 69 with 1:26 remaining, however Duquesne outscored the Blue & Gold 5-1 to finish on top.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Junior Kayla Spruill continued her hot streak with a game high 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 9-of-11 from the stripe. She added seven rebounds to her line.
- Sophomore Claire Jacobs finished with nine points, three assists, and two steals.
- Sophomore Amy Jacobs registered eight points and three assists.
- Seniors Deja King and Haleigh Hill dropped seven points apiece, with Hill adding six rebounds and a career best three blocks to her totals.
- Senior Kate Hill dished out five assists.
- La Salle shot 39.0% from the floor, 28.0% from deep, and 81.0% from the line.
- Collectively the Explorers handed out 20 assists for just the second time this season.
- Nine of the 10 Explorers who played registered a point.
