Offensive Outburst Pushes Explorers Past Mount St. Mary's, 5-3

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle men's soccer team used three second-half goals to erase an early deficit and pick up its second win of the season, 5-3, at Mount St. Mary's (Md.) on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountaineers struck the first tally of the game with a goal in the sixth minute.
  • It didn't take long for La Salle to respond though as freshman Junior Nare netted his first collegiate goal on a pass from Eoghan McGovern to tie things up at one apiece.
  • Mount St. Mary's would go back on top 10 minutes later, however, with a 19th minute tally to make it 2-1 in favor of the home team.
  • Junior Omari Cotterell evened the score once again in the 34th minute with his second goal of the season, and the two squads went into halftime deadlocked at 2-2.
  • Junior Ike Hollinger broke the tie in the 55th minute when he drew a penalty and converted his third career goal to put La Salle up 3-2.
  • Just over three minutes later, the Explorers struck again as Nare found fellow freshman Scott Beeks for his first collegiate goal, providing a two-goal lead in the 58th minute.
  • The Mount got one back on a penalty kick in the 74th minute, but the Explorers immediately responded just 51 seconds later when junior Andrew Weir dropped a beautiful pass to freshman Justin Brunow for his first career goal and a 5-3 advantage that would solidify the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • La Salle dominated the shot advantage for the third consecutive game, outshooting Mount St. Mary's 25-10, with a 12-5 shot on goal margin.
  • It was the most goals La Salle has scored in a game since Nov. 11, 2017, when the Explorers beat George Washington 5-3.
  • Nare finished with one goal and one assist and was one of three freshmen to find the back of the net on the day.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers (2-1) will have plenty of time to rest before their home opener at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday, March 6, against Drexel at 7 p.m.
