PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle baseball team opened up its season at Hank DeVincent Field on Friday, dropping a doubleheader to Hofstra, 7-0 and 4-2. Freshman right-handed pitcher
Frank Elissalt was the bright spot for the Explorers with 11 strikeouts in his collegiate debut.
GAME 1 - Hofstra 7, La Salle 0
- Hofstra jumped in front in the third inning on an RBI single, but the Explorers picked a runner off stealing home to prevent further damage.
- The Pride opened things up in the fifth inning, however, taking advantage of two La Salle errors to plate four runs in the frame to make it 5-0.
- Hofstra added a run on a double steal in the sixth and one more in the eighth on an Austin Gauthier home run.
- Hofstra starting pitcher Jack Jett nearly had a no-hitter, but senior Jack Cucinotta broke up the bid with an infield single in the sixth inning.
GAME 2 - Hofstra 4, La Salle 2
- The Explorers got off to a much stronger start in the second game as Cucinotta led off with a walk, stole second and later scored on an RBI triple by sophomore Elijah Dickerson.
- Dickerson then came across the plate in the next at-bat, with graduate student Ryan Guckin doubling to left cent to provide an early 2-0 lead for La Salle.
- Elissalt was dealing on the mound, striking out nine over the first five innings to keep Hofstra off the board.
- The Pride finally got some production in the sixth though and tied the game at two all on a two-run double by Bryan Goulard.
- La Salle had a golden opportunity to regain the lead in the seventh inning with the bases loaded, but the Explorers couldn't take advantage.
- Instead, Hofstra tallied two runs in the eighth to go in front and held on for the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Elissalt allowed just two earned runs on three hits to go with the 11 strikeouts, which is unofficially the most by an Explorer in their freshman debut and the most by any La Salle pitcher in the modern-stat era.
- Cucinotta drew four walks on the day out of the leadoff spot, while senior Tommy Toal was 2-for-7 with a double.
