ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Men's water polo fell to George Washington in its final game of the weekend on Sunday, 9-8. La Salle was neck-and-neck with its opponent for the entirety of the game until the Colonials registered the go-ahead goal with less than three minutes to play. Freshman goalkeeper
Veljko Kotarica did his part to keep the Explorers in contention, finishing with 12 saves on 21 shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- George Washington started the stronger of the sides with a 3-1 first quarter. La Salle rebounded in the second frame with a 3-2 edge and closed the gap to 5-4 at the half.
- The teams parried back-and-forth in the third with the Colonials slightly outscoring the Explorers, 3-2 and entered the final quarter with a two-goal advantage.
- The Blue & Gold tied the game in the fourth quarter, but George Washington scored with 2:25 remaining to claim the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Explorers received solid contributions from all classes on Sunday. Kotarica headlined for the freshmen, senior Ash Lyne and Daniel Domotor each tallied a brace, sophomore Callin Chimilar also scored twice, and junior Tyler Williams got on the scoresheet.
- Domotor had a hand in five of the team's eight goals, finishing with three assists in addition to his two scores.
- Chimilar displayed his defensive aptitude in this game with two steals and three blocks.
- Senior Cole Strohson also had an impactful day with a goal and three steals.
UP NEXT
- La Salle concludes regular season action with a doubleheader at Fordham on Tuesday evening. The first game will start at 4 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m. Postseason play begins four days later.
