Four Score in Double Figures as Women’s Basketball’s Comeback Falls Just Short Against Saint Louis

PHILADELPHIA – Four Explorers scored in double figures on Friday night as the La Salle women's basketball team (9-9, 5-6 A-10) comeback bid fell short against Saint Louis (5-3, 3-3 A-10), 72-65. The last time the Blue & Gold had four in double digits was last season against the Billikens.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Kayla Spruill connected on a pair of triples to give La Salle a 6-4 lead after the first 1:43. The teams exchanged the next 10 points for five apiece at the media stoppage with 3:56 remaining. During that stretch, the Blue & Gold held Saint Louis without a field goal for a 3:30 span. The home team held a one-point margin through the final 3:56 of the period for a 19-16 lead.
  • The Billikens pulled ahead to start the second stanza with a 17-8 run over the first 6:02. La Salle scored eight of the final 14 points, including the final four to cut the deficit to 39-35 at the half.
  • Saint Louis pushed its lead back to seven at the media stoppage with 4:35 left in the third after a 14-11 benefit. La Salle took the next five points to cut it to a one possession game, however the Billikens scored the next seven straight to force an Explorers' timeout. La Salle added two from the line to finish the period down 60-53.
  • La Salle jumped out to a 5-1 run over the first 2:40 to bring it back to a three point game, 61-58, before Saint Louis took a timeout. The Explorers were able to tie the game with a triple by sophomore Claire Jacobs at 61 each, but the visitors took five of the next seven points to make it a two possession game. Jacobs hit a jumper to knock the lead down to three with 37 seconds left. La Salle played for a stop, but Saint Louis converted a layup to take it back out to five points.
