Men's Soccer Works 1-1 Draw at UMass in A-10 Opener

AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Isak Sedin scored his first goal of the season as the La Salle University men's soccer team worked a 1-1 draw in its Atlantic 10 Conference opener at Massachusetts Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Minutemen got the first tally of the game on an Alec Hughes goal in the 13th minute to make it 1-0.
  • Less than seven minutes later, Sedin evened the score at one apiece with a 19th-minute goal on an assist from junior Sam DeCencio.
  • Junior goalkeeper Brett Werner made two saves in the second half and the La Salle defense withstood 11 UMass shots to keep the score tied at 1-1, leading to extra time.
  • In extra time, the Explorers held a 3-2 shot advantage, including a shot on target by junior Ike Hollinger, and La Salle held UMass without a shot in the second overtime as the game came to an end in a 1-1 tie.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • UMass held a stiff advantage in shots with a 20-11 edge, but it was actually the Explorers who had the shot-on-goal advantage, 7-5.
  • Werner finished with three saves, while his counterpart, Marvyn Dorchin, stopped six shots.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will return home on Sunday when they welcome rival Saint Joseph's to McCarthy Stadium. The game will stream on ESPN+ and kick-off is set for 4 p.m.
