Men’s Soccer Blanks Saint Joseph’s for First A-10 Win

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's soccer team picked up its first Atlantic 10 Conference win and its first shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over rival Saint Joseph's from McCarthy Stadium on Sunday. Juniors Ike Hollinger and Omari Cotterell provided the scoring for the Explorers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Explorers wasted no time in finding the back of the net as Hollinger set up a free kick in the third minute and struck it past the Saint Joseph's keeper for a 1-0 advantage.
  • La Salle had plenty of chances in the opening half with eight shots but couldn't stretch the advantage as the Explorers entered the halftime break with a one-goal lead.
  • Cotterell gave the Explorers some breathing room finally in the 53rd minute as he finished off a beautiful goal with assists going to Hollinger and freshman Justin Brunow to make it 2-0.
  • Saint Joseph's was never really able to get things going offensively and junior goalkeeper Brett Werner only needed to make one save to secure the clean sheet.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • For Cotterell, it was his third goal of the season and sixth for his career, while Hollinger totaled four shots on the day and had his second goal of the season and fourth career tally.
  • La Salle held a decisive 14-7 shot advantage and a 5-2 shot on goal edge.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will be back in action on Wednesday for their final non-conference game at Drexel. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
