PHILADELPHIA - The wait is finally over. The La Salle University field hockey team opens its 2021 spring season on Friday with a matchup against local rival Drexel. First draw is set for 3:30 p.m. Two days later, the Explorers will face Monmouth for another road non-conference match beginning at 11:00 a.m.
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS
- The Explorers, under the direction of first-year head coach MaKayla Hancock, welcome back a pair of key upperclassman starters from the 2019 season in senior Rialee Allen and redshirt junior Cassie Kincaid.
- Allen started all 18 contests for La Salle and led the team in goals with seven. Kincaid made nine starts in goal and picked up three wins, including two shutouts of Sacred Heart and Wagner.
- Also returning is a large sophomore class that made an immediate impact on the program.
- Samie Hackman tallied five goals to rank second on the team, and Kelsey Jones, Emma Holzman, and Hannah Yanovich started 15+ games apiece in their first seasons.
- La Salle also welcomes another big class of six newcomers, with four hailing from the state of Pennsylvania.
ABOUT DREXEL
- The Dragons join the Explorers in opening their season on Friday afternoon. In 2019, Drexel went 4-14 overall and 2-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
- The two teams have not played since the 2009 season, when the Dragons earned a 4-1 win.
ABOUT MONMOUTH
- Monmouth opened the year with a 2-1 win over Hofstra and are coming off an impressive 2019 campaign which saw them ranked in the national poll.
- The Hawks went 14-5 and a perfect 5-0 in America East play, before falling in the title game to Stanford.Â
