Delaware Takes Two from Baseball in Sunday Doubleheader

NEWARK, Del. – The La Salle University baseball team dropped a doubleheader on the road to Delaware on Sunday, 7-4 and 14-4.

Game 1 – Delaware 7, La Salle 4
  • The Blue Hens scored a run in each of the first three innings to take command early, 3-0.
  • La Salle got back within two in the fourth when redshirt sophomore Nick Di Vietro delivered a two-out RBI single to left field to score sophomore Elijah Dickerson.
  • But Delaware starting pitcher Chris Ludman held the Explorers in check over 8+ innings on the mound, and four runs in the eighth gave Delaware a commanding 7-1 lead going to the ninth.
  • The Explorers didn't go down easy as freshman Will Binder and sophomore Connor Coolahan each hit RBI singles to score junior Nick Hopkins and Di Vietro, and an RBI groundout by senior Jack Cucinotta made it 7-4, but that was as close as La Salle would get.
Game 2 – Delaware 14, La Salle 4
  • Delaware leapt out to a commanding lead right from the start in game two with five runs in the first inning, forcing La Salle to turn to its bullpen early.
  • The Explorers got one back in the second when Coolahan drove a double to right center to bring in Di Vietro, making it 5-1.
  • However, the Blue Hens added runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh frames to take full control, 13-1.
  • La Salle scored four in the eighth, with freshman Emmanuel Rodriguez drawing a bases-loaded walk to score fellow rookie Pat Toal, sophomore John DeMucci driving in Hopkins on a fielder's choice and Di Vietro then scoring on a passed ball.
  • Delaware added one more run in the bottom of the eighth and closed it out with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
