Baseball Hosts Penn for Three Games this Weekend

BASE Miller huddle

Baseball | April 29, 2021

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University baseball team will face a familiar foe this weekend when the Explorers host city rival Penn for a three-game series at Hank DeVincent Field.

THE MATCHUPS (vs. Penn – 3 Games) LAST TIME OUT
  • The Explorers piled on 16 runs in a high-scoring, 16-11 victory at Towson on Tuesday for their 11th win over the last 13 games.
  • Junior Tatem Levins hit two home runs and senior Jack Cucinotta went yard as well to lead the La Salle offense.
  • The Explorers jumped out to a 9-0 lead, thanks to Cucinotta's three-run shot and Levins' first three-run bomb of the game, and held off a late Towson surge.
  • Once the Tigers got close at 9-7, Levins crushed his second long ball of the day high over the right field wall to make it a five-run game.
  • Levins finished 3-for-6 with a career-high six RBI and three runs scored while also surpassing 100 career RBI.
  • Sophomore Connor Coolahan went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, while classmate Elijah Dickerson was 2-for-5 with a run. Senior Colin Kennedy improved to 3-0 as he earned the win in relief, and redshirt freshman Colin Yablonski had a career-high five strikeouts.
ON A HISTORIC PACE
  • After a 3-1 series win over St. Bonaventure last weekend, La Salle is now off to its best Atlantic 10 start ever at 9-3 in league play, which has the Explorers first in the conference standings.
  • Tuesday's win put La Salle at 25-13 overall, extending its best start in school history. The Explorers became just the fifth team in program history to reach the 25-win plateau. The school record is 31 wins set by the 1985 team that made the NCAA tournament.
  • The Explorers have been very impressive on the road at 14-6 as the away team, including 12-3 over the last 15 away games. On the flip side, La Salle has been heating up at home, winning six of their last seven games at Hank DeVincent Field.
MOVIN' ON UP
  • Ryan Guckin has 43 career doubles, which ranks eighth in program history. He needs only one more to move into seventh place all-time. He also has five triples this season, which is tied for fifth in the program, and one more would put him in a tie for second. Guckin has 107 career RBI as well, just 12 shy of 10th on the program's career list. He has 15 doubles this season, just two away from a tie for seventh on that list too.
  • Jack Cucinotta has 39 career stolen bases, which ranks seventh in school history. He needs just one more to move into sixth place all-time. Cucinotta also has 21 stolen bases this season, which puts him in a tie for eighth on the single-season list. He needs just one more to move into seventh.
  • Frank Elissalt has 72 strikeouts this season, good for ninth on the program's single-season ranks. He needs only three more to move into a tie for seventh. Five more would put him in a tie for fourth place all-time. Elissalt (5-1) also only needs one more win to move into sixth place in single-season wins.
  • Colin Scanlon has 147 career strikeouts, which ranks 10th in school history. He is 35 strikeouts away from Jeff La Porta in ninth place. Scanlon (5-2) is also just one win away from sixth place in single-season victories.
  • Colin Kennedy has five saves this season, needing only one more to tie for 10th on the program's single-season saves list.
  • Tatem Levins has 40 RBI this season, needing only 10 more to tie himself (2019) and two others for 10th place in single-season history. Levins also has 103 career RBIs, needing 16 more to reach 10th all-time.
SCOUTING PENN
  • The Quakers and Explorers have already met six times this season, with the two teams at an even 3-3 split so far. Penn is 4-7 overall and just 0-2 on the road this season, playing a limited local schedule due to Ivy League restrictions.
  • Penn's last two games were against La Salle, with the Quakers walking off with an 8-7 win in 10 innings last on April 20. La Salle won the previous meeting at Hank DeVincent Field, 6-4, on April 14.
  • Tommy Courtney leads the team with a .326 batting average, while Wyatt Henseler is batting .308 with a team-high nine RBI. As a team, Penn is batting .246 over its 11 games.
  • La Salle will most likely see Penn's top starter Joe Miller on the mound Friday. He's struggled with an 0-3 record and a 9.00 ERA over four starts. Kevin Eaise (2-0, 1.74 ERA) has been the Quakers' most consistent arm and is likely to make a start this weekend as well.
