Explorers' Early Lead Slips Away in Overtime Defeat at Rhody

KINGSTON, R.I. - The La Salle University men's soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead but couldn't hold on at Rhode Island on Saturday in a 3-2 overtime defeat. Freshman Scott Beeks and junior Charlie Collins scored the La Salle goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Beeks gave the Explorers an early 1-0 advantage in the sixth minute when he scored off a deflection from junior Ike Hollinger's shot attempt, his second career tally.
  • The Explorers later extended their lead to 2-0 just before halftime as freshman Junior Nare found Collins for a strike from the top of the box, the first goal of his career.
  • But the Rams quickly responded in the second half with a goal just 24 seconds into the second period.
  • Rhode Island then tied it up at two apiece in the 60th minute on a penalty kick, and the score remained even through the end of regulation.
  • In overtime, Michael Tavares scored the game-winning goal in the 96th minute to give the Rams the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Freshman goalkeeper Cam Hall made three saves in his first career start in net.
  • The two teams were even shooting the ball, 8-8 in shots and 6-6 in shots on goal.
