Baseball’s Historic Season Comes to a Close

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University baseball team's historic season came to a close on Saturday with a 5-2 setback at Saint Joseph's. The Explorers finished the year with a school-record 32 wins.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks jumped in front by a pair in the first inning on a two-run single up the middle by Brett Callahan.
  • The score remained 2-0 until the fourth when Brandon Drapeau hit a solo home run and then the Hawks took a 5-0 lead on an Andrew Cossetti two-run homer.
  • La Salle just couldn't get anything going against Saint Joe's starting pitcher Matt Kennedy, who held the Explorers scoreless over his 5.0 innings of work.
  • The Explorers rallied with two outs in the eighth though and came within striking distance, 5-2, thanks to a two-run double by sophomore Elijah Dickerson, scoring sophomore Connor Coolahan and graduate student Ryan Guckin.
  • Redshirt freshman Colin Yablonski held the Hawks hitless over his 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, but La Salle's comeback attempt came up just short.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • La Salle finishes the season 32-21 overall and 15-9 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Even though the Explorers tied with Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 North standings for the final playoff spot, the Hawks won the tiebreaker.
  • Dickerson led the way with a 2-for-4 showing with two doubles and two RBI. Coolahan was 1-for-2 with a run and a walk.
  • Yablonski retired all nine batters that he faced and had three strikeouts, while sophomore Gabe Rappa added three strikeouts as well in the start.
  • Senior Jack Cucinotta was 1-for-3 and stole his 29th base of the season, which leaves him third in single-season school history and fifth in career history with 47 in total.
