La Salle Shuts Out Drexel in Marathon Draw

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle women's soccer (1-2-1) went the distance with Drexel (2-1-1), holding the Dragons scoreless to earn a 0-0 draw on Thursday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In a defensive-minded first half, neither team recorded a shot on goal.
  • Preseason All-CAA senior Lauren Currey attempted two shots in the opening 45 minutes, but the Explorer defense blocked both attempts before they could reach redshirt-sophomore keeper Jordynn Stallard.
  • Stallard was busy in the second half, facing 11 shots while making seven saves.
  • The Explorer offense gained traction in the last 45 minutes of regulation, attempting five shots including two from sophomore Kelli McGroaty.
  • Drexel keeper Miyuki Schoyen stopped La Sale's lone shot on goal in the 58th minute, denying Explorer freshman Haley Gschrey and keeping the game scoreless through the end of regulation.
  • In the first overtime period, Drexel attempted two shots and each side was awarded a corner, but neither team was able to get a shot on goal.
  • Drexel had one last attempt with a corner kick in the 109th minute, but the La Salle defense managed a clear to secure the draw.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Stallard (1-1-1) picked up the fifth shutout of her career and her first of the season.
  • Freshman Lauren Costello, senior Isabella Gonsiewski, junior Naya Vialva, and senior Alyssa Van Heurck all logged 110 minutes in the field. Junior Emily Banashefski and freshman Shea Collins each tallied over 90 minutes.
  • Drexel entered Thursday's match averaging 2.33 goals per game, but were unable to solve the La Salle defense.
UP NEXT:
The Explorers will stay on their road to play their second ranked opponent in their opening five games when they head to Piscataway, N.J. to take on #16 Rutgers on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m.
