Explorers Fall in Overtime at UMBC, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA - Sophomores Dominick Bachstein and Justin Brunow each scored the first goals of their La Salle careers, but the Explorers (1-2) were tripped up by UMBC (1-1-1) in overtime, 3-2, at UMBC Retriever Park on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • La Salle opened the scoring in the 24th minute as the two sophomores teamed up, with Brunow finding Bachstein for the score.
  • The score would remain the same into intermission. The Retrievers held a 5-2 lead in shots, but the Explorers had six corner kicks compared to three for UMBC.
  • Both offenses picked up in the second half, with UMBC finding its first goal in the 59th minute as Jago Lott found the back of the net.
  • Fifteen minutes later, the Explorers took the lead right back as Brunow scored off a free kick.
  • The lead was shortlived, however, as Ryan Becher knotted the contest again in the 82nd minute.
  • After both teams failed to close the contest out in regulation, the match moved to overtime.
  • With less than two minutes remaining in the first extra period, UMBC scored the game-winning goal as Taylor Calheira cashed in on an opportunity that gave the home team the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • UMBC held a 16-10 edge in shots for the contest and a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Explorers totaled eight corner kicks for the contest, while the Retrievers had just five.
  • Brunow and Isak Sedin each had a pair of attempts for La Salle. Becher led all individuals with five shots, including three on goal.
  • Sophomore Cam Hall registered three saves in goal for the Explorers.
UP NEXT:
  • La Salle has a day off before completing the two-game road swing on Sunday, Sept. 5 at Navy. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
