Early Goal Leads Women’s Soccer Past Rhode Island

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's soccer team needed just five minutes to grab a goal, a lead they would maintain throughout the contest in a 1-0 win over Rhode Island at McCarthy Stadium on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Explorers got off to a fast start, needing just five minutes to find the back of the net. Alyssa Van Heurck found Molly O'Brien, who played a pass into the path of Mary Kate Vinkler. The redshirt senior got past the Ram defense and volleyed her effort off the post and into the back of the net before wheeling off to celebrate.
  • Vinkler again tested the keeper into a save on the 10th minute, Faith Hutchins answering the challenge on the second chance.
  • The Explorers held the Rams to just one shot on target in the first half, a ranged effort outside of the box that fell comfortably in the path of Michela Auguadro.
  • Auguadro had her first real test only minutes into the second half as the freshman fully extended to her left to push away a shot from Hope Santaniello.
  • The Explorers came inches away from doubling their lead in the 55th minute. Lauren Costello's header off a corner kick slammed against the crossbar before the Rams were able to clear the danger.
  • Rhode Island's most dangerous attempt came with just over six minute remaining in the contest. Santaniello was once again denied by Auguadro, the freshman goalkeeper getting a fingertip on the Ram attacker's drive from outside the box to push it onto the post and out for a corner kick.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • La Salle held a 15-13 advantage in shots, both teams with four on goal. The Explorers were led by Vinkler's six shots and three on target.
  • The Explorers held a 5-3 tally in corner kicks.
  • Auguadro finished the evening with four saves with zero goals allowed.
  • La Salle moves to 3-6-2 on the season and 1-2-1 in conference play.
