La Salle Lacrosse Falls to Davidson on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA – Davidson's high-powered offense stayed hot on Sunday, as the Wildcats beat La Salle women's lacrosse 18-7 at McCarthy Stadium.
 
The game served as senior day for La Salle's three-member senior class of Kiki Venza, Erin Welsh, and Madison Hamilton. The three seniors combined for three goals and eight draw controls on Sunday on two goals from Venza, a goal and four draws for Welsh, and four draw controls for Hamilton in her first start of 2022.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Emma Johnson broke the ice in the first 44 seconds for Davidson (9-2, 3-1 A-10), giving the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead.
  • Welsh answered with a goal on a feed from Emily Johnston as La Salle leveled the score at 1-1.
  • The Wildcat offense caught fire to end the first, scoring seven of the next nine goals from six different goal scorers to take an 8-3 lead into the break. Venza and Maddie Henderson had the goals for La Salle (3-9, 1-3) during the stretch, while Johnston added her second assist.
  • Davidson took control in the second, outscoring the Explorers 5-0 in the frame to take a 13-3 lead into the half. The Wildcats led the quarter in shots 12-3, while Amanda Monahan made three of her eight saves for Davidson in the frame.
  • Play stabilized for La Salle in the third, as each side scored two goals. Henderson added her second for the Explorers while Sara Grassi added the first goal of her career on a free-position shot to bring the score to 15-5 at the end of the third.  
  • The Wildcats opened the fourth on a 3-0 run, getting goals from Grace Fahey, Riley Redpath, and Josie Lambert over the first seven minutes of the quarter. La Salle answered with the final two goals of the game, as Venza scored on a feed from Grassi and Maddie Dachowski buried a goal on a setup from Kira Sides.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Wildcats led the game in shots (32-22), shots on goals (25-17), and ground balls (21-15) while La Salle finished with eight more draw controls (18-10).
  • After collecting her first career goal, Grassi recorded her first career assist in the fourth in a multi-point performance.
  • Venza's two-goal afternoon marked the second game with multiple goals this season, matching her two-goal day against Iona in La Salle's season opener.
  • Emily Johnston secured a season-high eight draw controls, her most since racking up nine as a freshman on April 13, 2018 against Duquesne as she continues to extend her program-record total.
  • Now having appeared in two games in a return from injury for La Salle, Hamilton added four more draw controls on Sunday to give her six in two games.
  • Goalkeepers Kelli McGroarty and Julia Dellaratta combined to allow 18 goals while making seven saves on Sunday.
