PHILADELPHIA – After a nine year hiatus of a gold medal at the Murphy Cup Regatta, the Explorers Varsity 4+ boat broke that streak en route to a first place finish and NovaCare Student-Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday afternoon.
The boat of
Jimmy McInerney,
Joe Yeager,
Shawn Donohue and
James White with coxswain
Trevor Fawcett took a clean sweep of top times, finishing first in their heat and in the finals to secure gold.
The Explorer boat finished with a time of 6:28.39 in the qualifying heat, finishing 17 seconds faster than the nearest team in Temple, more than 30 seconds quicker than Atlantic 10 foes Fordham to cruise to a place in the finals. The Explorers repeated their result in the final, finishing three seconds ahead of Temple's "A" boat to take the top spot in the Men's Collegiate Varsity 4+, ending a near decade drought at the top of the Murphy Cup podium.
The Explorers look to take the momentum of their opening race of the spring championship season into the Knecht Cup on April 9-10 in Cherry Hill.
