Men's Rowing | May 13, 2022
PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's rowing team completed the opening day of the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta on Friday, setting themselves up for a strong finish in tomorrow's finale on the Schuylkill River.
"Excellent day for the Explorers," said assistant coach
Ivo Krakic. "Three boats made it into the grand final, and one is set up for a strong chance to join them. We are looking forward to very exciting races tomorrow!"
Opening the Explorers' day on the river was the Freshman 4+ boat, coxswained by
Dominic Mazza. The rookies put in a blistering shift with a time of 6:34.41 to win their heat, also holding the top time in the field by more than eight seconds of the 20 boat field.
With the Second Varsity 4+ boat up to the task on the river next, the Explorer men passed the test with flying colors, also winning their heat at a time of 6:39.33 for a near 10 second lead in their heat. The boat produced the third fastest time in the field, qualifying for semis with just three seconds off the pace of the leading Stetson boat.
The Explorers made it three from three after the Varsity 4+ stepped up to the challenge and again took it head on, their time of 6:31.68 good enough for a 15 second lead over their heat to put them into the semifinals.
As all six boats in the lightweight division automatically qualified for a spot in tomorrow's Grand Finals, the Explorer boat was able to get a practice run in, setting a time of 6:36.06 in the heat to sit just over two seconds behind the leaders for tomorrow's late afternoon action.
With the semis for the Men's Novice 4+ approaching on Friday afternoon, the La Salle boat showed no signs of slowing down, improving on their earlier time to once again finish at the top of the field with a time of 6:32.86, securing a spot in tomorrow's Grand Finals at 12:50 p.m.
In similar fashion, the Second Varsity 4+ boat also pulled in a similar time to their first effort with a 6:34.92 finish, taking the top time overall in the event as well as putting them in the Grand Finals to compete for the Ken Shaw Trophy at 1:50 p.m. on Saturday.
Looking to make it four boats from four to qualify for the Grand Finals, the men's varsity 4+ side compete at 8:12 a.m. on Saturday for a spot in the finals on the line.
