Women's Soccer Earns Second Straight Road Win, Defeating Towson, 3-1

TOWSON, Md. - After Towson equalized the score at 1-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half, the La Salle women's soccer team responded with a pair of goals over the final 5:45 to come away with a 3-1 win on Sunday evening. The victory moves the Explorers to 2-0 on the year, while the Tigers fall to 1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • La Salle looked as though it was going to take the lead courtesy of a penalty kick, following a foul in the box that was called on Towson. Freshman Ricshya Walker made the run down the left side that gave the Explorers a prime chance.
  • Towson goalkeeper Riley Melendez was up to the challenge, diving left and stopping Kelli McGroarty's attempt to keep the contest scoreless.
  • With less than five minutes to go in the opening stanza, a corner kick led to the first goal of the game by La Salle. Haley Gschrey headed a shot from the middle of the box that looked destined for the lower-left corner, but a Towson defender made the save.
  • Sophomore Courtney Butlion was right there to pounce on the initial stop and converted her first goal as an Explorer to put the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.
  • The score remained the same for the majority of the second half, before the Tigers tied the match on Phoebe Canoles' right-footed blast.
  • La Salle responded less than four minutes later as sophomore Shea Collins converted her chance after Gschrey and McGroarty both were denied by Melendez on tremendous stops.
  • McGroarty finally found the back of the net with less than a minute to go, as she converted a rebound chance after Walker had made an impressive run.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The two teams each had 12 shots over 90 minutes of action, with the Explorers putting 10 on frame and the Tigers having just five shots on goal.
  • McGroarty and Walker led La Salle with three shots apiece.
  • Walker tallied an assist on the final goal of the game, her first collegiate point.
  • Sophomore Michela Auguardo recorded four saves to earn her second win in goal of the season.
