Explorers’ Two First-Half Goals Enough to Top Fordham for Sixth Straight Win

PHILADELPHIA — The La Salle women's soccer team bounced back from giving up an early goal by scoring two goals in the first half and receiving a great defensive effort in the second half to beat Fordham, 2-1, for its sixth straight win in Atlantic 10 Conference play on Thursday night at McCarthy Stadium.

With the win, the Explorers are now 6-1 in A-10 play and 8-5-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Explorers saw their streak of not allowing a goal come to an end in the third minute after Fordham scored during a free kick attempt. The Explorers' scoreless streak ended at 468:30.
  • However, the Explorers bounced back and tied the game at 1 after Haley Gschrey knocked in a goal off a pass from Giovanna Castorina.
  • In the 32nd minute, Elizabeth Estrada converted a penalty kick after being tackled in the box to give La Salle a 2-1 lead that they eventually took into halftime.
  • In the second half, Fordham controlled most of the possession, outshooting La Salle, 5-1.
  • Fortunately, the Explorers' defense stepped up, forcing four of the Rams' five shots to go wide of the goal. The other Fordham shot attempt was saved by goalie Michela Auguadro in the final seconds of the game to preserve the victory.
GAME NOTES
  • With her goal that tied the game in the first half, Gschrey now has five goals on the season. The junior is tied for the team lead that category and in points (11) with Justyce Hollenbach.
  • With her game-winning goal, Estrada also reached double digits in points on the season, as she has 10.
  • Goalkeeper Michela Auguadro saved two shots in the win.
