Miller Shines as Women’s Basketball Drop Big 5 Contest at Penn

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle women's basketball drops a midweek contest to fellow Big 5 school Penn 79-71. Makayla Miller made her first start as an Explorer and scored a season-high 23 points in the loss.

The Explorers will return to Tom Gola Arena on Sunday, Dec. 3 when they welcome the Virginia Cavaliers to town.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Quakers got off to a quick start scoring seven unanswered points to open the first quarter, but La Salle got right back in it. Jolene Armendariz hit from deep range to get the Explorers within three.
  • Makayla Miller was able to get going right away in the first quarter scoring seven points in the first frame of play. The graduate student helped La Salle stay with the Quakers by the end of the first as they were down 20-23.
  • Early in the second the Explorers got their first lead of the game. An Armendariz three-pointer and a driving layup by Tiara Bolden got La Salle on top 25-23.
  • Penn did not go away, however. Stina Almqvist was the star for the Quakers and got them back on top midway through the second quarter.
  • The Explorers were able to minimize the Penn lead as they went to the break down 44-40. Almqvist finished the first half with 18 points.
  • Miller picked up where she left off in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Her driving layup with 7:02 left in the third was able to cut the Penn lead down to three. The scoring would remain quiet for both teams, however, in the remainder of the third, Penn was on top 57-51.
  • Jordan Obi silenced the Explorers comeback efforts in the fourth. She finished the game with 18 points, ten of those coming in the final ten minutes of play as.
