PHILADELPHIA — The La Salle women's rowing team placed second in the Women's Collegiate Varsity 8+ Petite Final at the 40
th annual Murphy Cup on Saturday on the Schuylkill River.
The Explorers earned their silver medal in 1V8 after posting a time of 6:53.09. The Explorers, coxswained by
Marissa Paul, led for most of the race, but Holy Cross came from behind to win the event in 6:51.03.
"Today was a fantastic step forward for our program," La Salle women's head coach Kelsey Franks said. "The 1V8 executed very well in their heat, and in their final held onto first place for most of the race. Their greatest weakness was exposed in the last 500 and ultimately fell to Holy Cross."
The Explorers also saw its 2
nd Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ boats compete on Saturday.
The 2V8, coxxed by
Arya Singh, clocked a time of 6:53.33 in the third heat to finish third behind Drexel (6:46.51) and Delaware (6:49.29), respectively. The top two teams in each heat advanced to the final.
As for the Varsity 4+ crew, coxxed by Samantha Ojeme, it finished fourth in its heat in 8:02.87.
"We showcased our depth in all three categories," Franks said. "In the V4, we are right on track with our time standards and ready to find more speed in this new lineup. The 2V8 fell on the wrong side of the seeding today - they put down one of the fastest times in their category but ultimately took third and missed out on the grand final."
The Explorers will compete next Saturday and Sunday at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
"We have some big goals for this season and there are growing pains that come with that, but this was a great start and the women are hungry for more," Franks said.
